Peter Martocchio and Carolyn Mallory have come together for this joint art show. Both watercolour artists, they live in the Wolfville area.
Change and exploration aptly describe their combined works.
Peter’s paintings highlight the changes in light, for example as the sun wakes up the landscape or christens the snow with radiance. He explores the changes in light on a myriad of different subject matters.
Carolyn’s work tends towards an exploratory look at different subject matters, for example how do the coloured ropes at Peggy’s Cove influence the viewer’s sense of the more mundane fisherman’s huts? How does the lone bench at High Cliff Cove affect the viewer’s sense of the cliffs just beyond? Isolation or peacefulness? She examines coastal life, be it Nova Scotian or Arctic, on both the grand and the small scale.
Peter’s illuminates the rural and coastal settings he chooses with his play on lights and shadows. The ephemeral quality of light is perfectly captured. The constant changes in weather and light that are part of maritime life come to life in his scenes by the ocean and on land. Peter is a master of illumination–you only have to look at his work to know this is the case.
Carolyn travels in the Arctic extensively and paints what she sees, from the small Arctic plants to the vast landscapes littered with icebergs. She also loves to play with light as demonstrated in her portrayal of a fiddler in the spotlight.
